Homage to Golf by Sandy Tatum
My reflections on the fascination with golf have turned up a few thoughts I am moved to share with you.
There are what can be identified as the externals:
-
The aesthetics of the playing fields;
-
The camaraderie;
-
The communing with nature;
-
The refuge that a few hours on a golf course provides from a world embroiled in such turmoil.
What makes the pursuit so utterly compelling are the internals, i.e., the challenges:
So much more is involved than accomplishing the techniques required to play respectably;

There are the satisfactions of success and frustrations of failure;
-
There is the modification of expectations to fit the reality;
-
There is the process of accomodating all of that in a mode that never loses connection with how satisfying giving your all can be regardless of what score you make
And then there are the people with whom the game puts you in contact.
